Roasted Bean Vocabulary
Roast & Caffeine
Contrary to popular belief, the darker the roast, the less caffeine the coffee contains. So the longer the coffee bean is roasted, the darker it becomes, and the more caffeine is cooked away.
Arabica: usually grown at higher elevations and produces a mild flavor with fantastic aroma
Robusta: usually grown at lower elevations. Has a more bitter and acidic flavor but contains approximately 50% more caffeine then Arabica.
Coffee Grows on Trees
Coffee grows on trees and produces a red berry (sometimes referred to as the cherry). When picked it is then dried and the coffee seed is extracted from within.
Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, 2nd only to oil.
Studies have shown hundreds of health benefits of drinking coffee. These range from reduction of cancers, heart disease, liver disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Type II Diabetes, and many more.
Source of Antioxidants
Coffee is the No. 1 source of antioxidants in the western diet. Antioxidants help the body fight chemicals called “free radicals.” This increase of antioxidants help protect your cells from oxidation and create a list of health benefits.
How does caffeine work?
Caffeine attaches to receptors in the body which blocks the attachment of adenosine (which would have made you drowsy). This creates a natural adrenaline release which creates the alert/energy/awake affect we all are looking for. We call this the “iVibe Effect.”
For most coffee drinkers, the recommendation for moderate consumption is 300 mg of caffeine per day or the equivalent of 2-4 cups of coffee. On average each cup of coffee contains approx. 130mg of caffeine.
Coffee Growing Regions
All coffee grown is from “The Coffee Belt.” The Coffee Belt is composed of the regions of our world containing the conditions needed for coffee growth. Each coffee tree requires sunshine and warmth.
